Recovery Taught Our Family How to Love Without Losing Ourselves

When our son's addiction came to light, we were completely unprepared. Here's how Not One More Alabama helped our family find community, boundaries, and healing — together.

The following is a guest story submitted by Kathy L., a NOMA family member and community supporter.

Stories of Hope are shared with permission to help other families know they are not alone.

About four and a half years ago, our family’s world turned upside down.

We found out that our son and brother had been living with a longstanding drug addiction — something he had managed to keep hidden from all of us. The shock, confusion, and heartbreak was overwhelming. We were completely unprepared for this.

Those early days were filled with fear and uncertainty. We were searching for answers and guidance to help us help him — and our family. That’s when we found Not One More Alabama, and we found a community that understood. We were no longer alone. We learned how to support without enabling, and how to care for ourselves while still loving him deeply.

With the love and support at NOMA, healing began.

We learned that our son and brother was not choosing this — that he was struggling with a broken brain and needed compassion, boundaries, and a commitment to recovery.

Today, I am amazed by my son’s recovery journey, his recovery community, and recovering out loud. Being a part of NOMA, and having that same sense of community, love, and support, is something I will forever be grateful for. I will remain a part of it and always support it.
